Very Rare and Original, 1884 Cast Iron Clown Marble Game / Toy manufactured by Kyser & Rex Company of Frankfort, Pennsylvania.
This exceptionally rare, Tabletop Cast Iron Marble Toy measures approx. 9 ¾" long overall, 5” in diameter at the Shooting Gallery board and 2 3/4” tall to the top of the head of the separately cast, cast iron figural clown. The Toy features a seated Clown affixed to the arm of the cast iron playing surface by a spring. When ...the head of the Clown is pulled back, his legs are in the air and there is a cup int which a marble is placed. When the Clown’s head is released, the figure snaps forward launching the marble toward the target surface where there are various depressions with different numerical “score” designations. The depressions feature original paint in various colors and the figure of the Clown also features original surface paint. Cast into the underside of the Toy is text that reads “Pat. Apl 8, 1884”.
Our research had shown this Kyser & Rex Cast Iron Marble Toy to be exceptionally rare. We have uncovered only a handful that have been offered for sale over the past few years and in 39+ years of selling cast iron toys we have never before encountered an example. This is one of the very few, all cast iron Marble games / Toys ever manufactured.
This original, Cast Iron Clown Marble Game / Toy is in very good condition. The surface paint is 100% original and the Toy retains a significant amount of the original surface paint on the Clown figure and the depressions but the flat surfaces of the playing surface (if they were originally painted) have no surface paint and light surface oxidation. The other examples that we have been able to look at also have no significant surface paint on these flat surfaces and we believe that these surfaces were not originally painted or had a surface that was easily lost. The Toy has never been repainted, touched-up, restored or altered in any way and there are no cracks, breaks, chips, repairs or physical damage of any kind to the cast iron. The Toy does lack the small wire “catch” that would hold the Clown figure “cocked” in place.

(We have includes a number of glass marbles that came to us with the Toy – we do not believe that they are original to the Toy and we have been unable to determine if the Toy originally came with marbles and, if so, what type)
