A rare double portrait piece, it was struck there in 59 AD for the Emperor Nero in honor of his deified, adoptive, father, Claudius.
Nero ruled the "Roman World" from 54 until 68 AD and was possibly the worst Emperor Rome ever had. He should have been born an artist but was unlucky. His reign saw Rome burn, Nero blamed it on the Christians and they paid dearly in the Coliseum and at the stake. Saints Peter and Paul died about the time this coin was struck.
Certified by NGC as Choice XF with 4/5 Strike and 3/5 Surface.
"Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 1, by David R. Sear. #2055.
Obverse: NERO • CLAVD • DIVI • CLAVD • F • CAESAR • AVG • GERMA • Nero Claudius, son of the God Claudius, Caesar Augustus, Germanicus. • Laureate head of Nero right. • The counterclockwise legend starting at 5 o'clock is mostly readable. Struck early in the reign, while Nero was still advertising his relationship with his recently deceased step-father and claiming to have "conquered" Germany.
As a measure of Nero's incompetence, in 67 a Roman Governor in Gaul or France, Vindex by name, had had enough of Nero's tyranny and rose in revolt. Nero went to Greece to play in the Olympic Games. While Vindex eventually fell, his revolt led to Nero killing himself in 68.
We must remember, history gets written by the winners, but some of the things Nero did are pretty well documented. He is reputed to have tried to drown his mother, Agrippina Junior, who had probably poisoned her husband, the Emperor Claudius so Nero could succeed. She managed to survive, (she could swim). So, he sent a soldier, with a sword, to put an end to her. He did this the year this coin was struck, 59 AD. He also got tired of his pregnant wife, so he kicked her in the stomach and was rid of both problems.
Reverse: DIVOS • CLAVD • AVGVST • GERMANIC • PATER • AVG • Laureate head of Claudius right.
"Claudius" was the 5th of the "Twelve Caesars". He ruled the Roman World from January 24, of 41 until his death on October 13, in 54. He was the Roman Caesar who actually conquered Britain and established it as a Roman colony.
Because he was afflicted with a limp and slight deafness due to illness at a young age, his "Royal" family ostracized Claudius and excluded him from public office. Claudius' infirmity probably saved him from the fate of many other nobles during the purges of Tiberius and Caligula's reigns; potential enemies did not see him as a serious threat. His survival led to his being declared Emperor by the Praetorian Guard after Caligula's assassination, at which point he was the last adult male of the "Julio-Augustan" family.

The Coin: Claudius and Caligula have long been the Keys of the highly sought after "Twelve Caesar" portraits in silver. Not many were struck and fewer survived. Some of the other Caesars are pricy but usually available. This one has been certified and graded by the prestigious third-party grading service Numismatic Guaranty Corporation or (NGC). Even though it has been professionally graded, that is just an opinion and grading is subjective, so please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
