CIVIL WAR MODEL 1859 U. S. CAVALRY GUTTERBACK SPUR WITH COIN ROWEL

For your consideration is a Civil War period 1859 U.S. Cavalry gutter back spur.
Here's the skinny on this spur. First, this spur is in fantastic shape and has great non-dug patina. Being that the U.S. Government transitioned many of the civil war period spurs into the Indian War era, that's where I'm putting my money. The rowel has been replaced by an 1880 penny and you can still read the date. This is a period modification and not something recent. It sometimes kills me to s...ee some of the spurs that come up for sale with recent coin replacement rowels, This is not one of them.
1880 falls into the Great West period during the unfortunate Indian Wars. And another possibility is that this spur survived the civil war and someone replaced the rowel. One will never know but it certainly has a story.
