It was struck in the spring or summer of 42 BC b...y a military mint in Italy moving with the "Pontifex Maximus and Triumvir" Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. His rare portrait is on the obverse and Caesar's heir, his fellow Triumvir, and the future first Emperor Augustus, but at this time still known as Octavian but called "Caesar", is on the reverse.

After Caesar was assassinated Marc Anthony went north with his army to attack one of the assassins. Meanwhile, Cicero incited the Senate to declare Anthony an outlaw and sent the two Consuls, their legions and young Octavian, who had raised another army, after him. After the fight, the two Consuls were dead, Octavian was bringing now his troops back to Rome and Anthony was forced to flee over the Alps to his friend, the Pontifex Maximus, Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. more…

"Roman Coins & Their Values", Volume 1, by David R. Sear. #1523.
"The History and Coinage of the Roman Imperators 49-27 BC" by David R. Sear. #140(a?).

Obverse: LEPIDVS • PONT • MAX • III • V • R • P • C • Lepidus, Pontifex Maximus, Triumvir. • NT and MA in ligature or monogram. • Bare head of Marcus Aemilius Lepidus right.

Lepidus and Anthony made common bond and returned to Italy. Octavian had returned to Rome and forced the Senate to declare him Consul, even though he was way underage for the office. Octavian then marched north to confront Lepidus and Anthony. When they met, instead of fighting, they formed the "Second Triumvirate".

Then, all three returned to Rome and the proscriptions began. This was when Cicero and many others died. This coin, the only issue by Lepidus, who quickly faded into the background, was struck at this time also. Anthony and the young "Caesar" went on to defeat Brutus and Cassius at Philippi and the rest as they say, is history.

Reverse: (C? CAESAR) • IMP • III • V • R • P • C • Gaius Caesar (Octavian), Imperator and Triumvir. • MP in ligature. • Bare head of Octavian right. • On some specimens there is an initial C before the name CAESAR, thus 140 or 140a, but as it is off the flan, here we cannot tell.

The Coin: A rare, rare, coin and so historical. Few of these were made because even this early, Lepidus was very much a "Junior" partner. It has been certified and graded by the prestigious third-party grading service Numismatic Guaranty Corporation or (NGC). Even though it has been professionally graded, that is just an opinion and grading is subjective, so please see the pictures and judge for yourself.
