This original, Cast Iron Bank measures approx. 6 3/4" tall and 4” by 1 1/2” at the base. The Bank features a marquis style front panel with a central bust portrait of beloved British Army Officer Herbert Kitchener surrounded by floral wreaths and topped by the British Royal Coat of Arms. The Bank retains 95% of its original, gold colored... surface paint as can be seen in the scans below. The bank was likely issued at the time of Kitchener’s death when the ship he was sailing on hit a German naval mine and sank killing 737 souls on board.
Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener, (24 June 1850 – 5 June 1916) was a senior British Army officer and colonial administrator who won notoriety for his imperial campaigns, most especially his scorched earth policy against the Boers and his establishment of concentration camps during the Second Boer War, and later played a central role in the early part of the First World War. In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Kitchener became Secretary of State for War, a Cabinet Minister. One of the few to foresee a long war, lasting for at least three years, and with the authority to act effectively on that perception, he organised the largest volunteer army that Britain had seen, and oversaw a significant expansion of materials production to fight on the Western Front. On 5 June 1916, Kitchener was making his way to Russia on HMS Hampshire to attend negotiations when the ship struck a German mine 1.5 miles west of the Orkney, Scotland, and sank. Kitchener was among 737 who died.
