This is the finest Tunbridge item we have ever had. It is a mid-Victorian (c. 1855) ogee sided sewing box with the primary veneer being birds-eye maple which is amazingly enhanced with tunbridge inlaid bands of flowers, leaves foliage and an astounding central scene of a large castellated country house surrounded with trees and landscaping. This central scene is centered on the top and is set in boxwood. There are a multitude of shades and subtle wood colors that brin...g up great detail in both the central scene and the foliated bands. The interior of the box has a removable tray (its edges also decorated with tunbridge inlay) which is fitted with many compartments for needles, thread, thimbles pins, etc. This tray and the rest of the interior of the box is either covered with scarlet silk or with gothic patterned paper also in a shade of scarlet. The box stands on turned burl walnut feet. The box is in great condition with a few minor professional repairs. There is a little wear here and there on the interior but it is original as are the lock and hinges as is virtually everything else on this amazing example of Tunbridge workmanship. The box is 9.25" long x 7.25" deep x 5.75" tall. Washington State buyers please add 10.1% State Sales Tax.
