VERY RARE c1820 JAS WOOD & SON GOULDING & CO LONDON BOXWOOD CLARINETAMAZNG ESTATE TREASURE AUCTION INCLUDNG FINE ASIAN ARTS Hello, thank you for having a look at our auctions! Up for auction is an early Boxwood Clarinet. This clarinet is made by” Jas Wood & Son New Compton Street, 50 Soho, London” as marked. Every portion of the boxwood clarinet is marked with the same matching makers mark. The clarinet is also marked to one section “Sold by Goulding & Co, Soho-Square, London”. I was able to find a couple very similar examples online in Instrument Museum collections, including the Horniam Instrument Museum in London. I have read that this maker was well respected for making some of the finest quality wood instruments of the period. I have also read this particular mark was used between 1817-1829, indicating late Georgian to earlier Victorian period. The clarinet is made of a fine boxwood with brass and Bovine bone mounts.
This Clarinet is in “estate fresh” condition as seen and is for restoration or parts. There are losses to the mouthpiece, an age related crack to the one upper middle section along with a missing brass piece and another brass piece with a wire replacing the original hinge pin that I believe could be easily replaced. The condition issues are only to the mouthpiece and the one section, the third section with the most brass implements, and the horn end are in very nice condition as seen. The Clarinet measures 23-1/2 inches long by 3 inches across the horn end. I believe this 200-year-old Clarinet is an example that is not easily found today. A really interesting and beautiful quality example that deserves some attention to hopefully make it usable again. As my auctions have run for over 15 years here online this fine Clarinet is being offered with absolutely no reserve!
