Setchell Carlson, like their radios, were known for building a quality television set but were still within reach to the average consumer. They were full transformer powered. This is a great vintage collectible. It is untested and being sold as is. It looks like everything is intact internally, all the knobs work, the antenna is intact, and the plug is pliable with no frays. It's considered a portable tube television set - it weighs about 40 pounds - not light - and will be reflected in the shipping price. This would be a great piece of Americana décor that would go in any room, especially someone trying to add a little late 50's / early 60's flair to your decorating. It can also be restored and watched again using a digital converter, or can be used as a prop for a movie or a play, or it can be repurposed - for example: some people have made dry bars out of these old sets and even fish tanks! But I must say - this one screams to be restored - it's a rare model.
Here's a great opportunity for a collector of 1950's memorabilia or vintage electronics aficionado to get a rare Cold War era TV for a reasonable price. This is a wonderful and interesting piece of 1950's Americana! These sets were not just aimed at the home market - but also targeted at the commercial and institutional markets and were built quite well as Motorola had a reputation for. They had hand wired modules that could be removed for servicing which was a sign of a quality set.
As stated, the TV is encased in aluminum, and it's in good overall condition - the back panel is intact, it has some imperfections in its form - but nothing that detracts from the overall look. It's all original and all the knobs seem to be working. There is nothing missing that I can tell. It's a perfect candidate for a restoration or is perfect as a collectible for your 1950's / 1960's mid-century modern memorabilia. The top has some staining and oxidation and the aluminum back has some imperfections but is still intact - not bad for a TV built during the Eisenhower administration!
