Here is a one-of-a-kind 1878 U.S. Patent Model No. 204.921 Automatic U.S. Railroad Car Coupler designed and built by Loren M. Webb and Edwin Tinker of Tuscarora, New York. This salesman’s sample model was registered with the United States Patent Office on September 10th, 1878. The model comes with its original Patent Office Registration paper signed by the Commissioner of Patents, E. Spear, who granted the patent. The actual model measures 13” by 6 1/4” by 3 1/4”. ... The model incorporates a dovetailed oak board frame with an underside coupling mechanism. It has steel wheels and rods attached to underside supports. The front oak rail has an attached oval brass ID plate that reads “Webb & Tinker’s Automatic Car Coupler PAT’D Sep. 10, 1878.” This is a unique and eye-catching U.S. railroad/train patent model.
