Robert Venturi, the recognized patriarch of postmodernism who drew inspiration from diverse historical sources, created this innovative design for Swid Powell in 1986. He cleverly intersected two planar silhouettes in a cruciform arrangement to form a three-dimensional standing object recycling and re-purposing the eighteenth-century Chippendale style. The form is closely related to Venturi's sign for Grands Restaurant (1962) and his furniture for Knoll (1984), pictured here for your consideration. A wonderful example of Swid Powell's objects designed by leading architects of the period. Swid Powell produced designs by an amazing range of leading architects including Richard Meier, Ettore Sottsass, Michael Graves, Robert Venturi, Zaha Hadid, Gwathmey Siegel, Stanley Tigerman, Robert AM Stern, Steven Holl George Sowden and others. The firm ceased production in the late 1990's and their objects have become increasingly sought after by modern design collectors and museums.
