Up for auction is a vintage Crafstman Commercial 1/2 HP Block Grinder. The model of this grinder is 397.19590, it is the much more desirable and less available big brother of the more abundant Craftsman 1/3 HP grinders. This grinder has a marked date on the bottom plate of September 12, 1972 which makes this thing almost 50 years old. These old grinders were made back when things were built to last; unlike the modern throw-away imports. If you've ever taken one of these ...apart and looked at the copper windings it is striking how thick they are compared to the windings of modern import grinders, even the nicer ones like JET. I bought this grinder from the grandson of the original owner. He claimed it was kept in a climate controlled shop from the time his grandfather had it and that it was lightly used for home projects. Given its condition it certainly could be true although I could not verify the claim. As you can see it came with a quench tray. Do a search for these quench trays and you'll see they typically run around $50 just by themselves.It comes with all four rubber feet which are in great shape. The eyeshields and glass are in good shape. Both shields have all four of the tabs on the under side that are commonly broken off. The glass is clear. There is a chip on the underside of one of the shields. It is visible if you zoom in on the picture showing the underside of the eye shields. I don't think it is a problem. The lamp is in excellent condition. Most lamps this old have goosenecks that are overcome with rust but this one still looks great.Both wheels pass the ring test. My personal philosophy is to replace wheels on really old machines regardless but I am happy to include them as long as you don't mind whatever extra shipping cost they may incur. There are a couple of spots where some silver touch up has been applied. It was like that when I got it (and I didn't notice it until later) so I don't have any more information on it than that. It fires up and runs strong and smooth. It's ready for another 50 years of service. I have a picture of a craftsman pedestal that I will let go for $100 as long as you pay the extra shipping. This pedestal didn't come with the grinder that is for sale but it is exactly what it would have come with if the original owner had purchased one with it.
