Offered is an archive of original published and unpublished files containing plays, poems, short stories, and other writings, some (or most?) containing or focused on Gay “lifestyle” subject matter.
Author Joseph Michael Rizzo, C.S.W. (1937-2015) was born and raised in Brooklyn, graduated college, and after working several years in the publishing industry, set up a practice in Manhattan as a psychotherapist. He lectured on homosexuality during the 1970s; an exa...mple of one of his presentations and an abstract are included in these files.
Joseph M Rizzo, who began creative writing during the mid 1950s, also held a Degree in English Literature. A witness to New York’s Gay scene beginning in the 1950s, some (or many) of his writings evoke the diversity of the city’s and surrounding areas’ Gay experiences. The earliest example in this archive is a provocative dark short story dating from 1957. Other than skimming through the files to catalog their contents, I have not sat down to actually read any of the writings. So for example, I do not know what any of the plays are about.
The resulting archive’s “catalog” is a 5-page document that is pictured among the photos, and will be printed out and included with the archive. The archive contains both original typed and copies of typed manuscripts. Some have hand-written corrections and notes.
The archive also contains documents and photos pertaining to the H B Playwrights Foundation, and the writings of a few other authors. MEASUREMENTS:
The archive’s stack of files measures about 19 1/2 inches. It weighs about 50 pounds. CONDITION:
The files and contents are in reasonably good condition. Most of the manuscripts have yellowed with time. Poor quality paper was used for some manuscripts, and these might be toned, brittle and flaking. This archive of manuscripts is old, used, and in as-is, as-found, estate condition. Assume it show its age, has wear, scuffmarks, and other minor defects. Condition problems, when found, are described & photographed. Some can occur multiple times; the item might have 100+ scuffmarks; not each can be described or photographed. Experienced dealers and collectors understand this.
