18th C. Heinrich Bucher Folk Art Paint Decorated Box, Berks County Pennsylvania

From Berks or Lancaster county Pennsylvania, made sometime circa 1760-1810. Attributed to the artisan usually identified as Heinrich Bucher, though now it is understood that Bucher was the owner, not the creator of the box. This example in the distinctive style of the still-unnamed “Bucher” box painter, having a house between two trees on the lid, with sprays of outsized tulips below the house and on the sides of the box. Wonderful rich oily patina to the original surface. Paint is... most worn on the lid; sides worn but still vivid. White pine box with original metal latch and wire hinges. Early notations in ink to interior; numbers, possibly dates, other words which may be names. Early repair to lid, with residue of old glue to interior. Also looks like some old minor mouse gnawing to two inner corners. Approx. 9” x 10 1/8” x 2 1/2”.
