This is the catalog issued in conjunction with the 1990 Smithsonian Institution exhibition of Irving Penn's masterful photography.
Review:
"The 120-print exhibition Irving Penn Master Images, co-organized by the National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, includes the American photographer’s famous fashion photographs, still lifes, nudes, ethnographic subjects, animal skulls and studio portraits."
"Readers will find portraits of 20th-century notables such as E.B. White, Georgia O'Keeffe, W.H. Auden, Igor Stravinsky, and Marlene Dietrich along with group portraits of hippies and Hell's Angels, not to mention classic photographs of chimney sweeps and other trades people of Paris and London. Add photographs from trips to Cameroon and Morocco, and one is left with a very good representation of the life's work of a photographer best known for his efforts in the fashion industry. Drawn from the collections of the National Museum of American Art and the National Portrait Gallery, the photographs are reproduced well in duotone."
Biography from his Foundation website:
"Irving Penn (1917-2009) was one of the 20th century's great photographers, known for his arresting images and masterful printmaking. Although he was celebrated as one of Vogue magazine's top photographers for more than sixty years, Penn was an intensely private man who avoided the limelight and pursued his work with quiet and relentless dedication. At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, he approached it with an artist's eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium, both in his professional and personal work."
