1861Selling here is the first edition of Mrs Beeton's 'Book of Household Management', published in London in 1861. This the second impression, publishers address given on title as The Strand (rather than Bouverie Street).
Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management, also published as Mrs Beeton's Cookery Book, is an extensive guide to running a household in Victorian Britain, edited by Isabella Beeton and first published as a book in 1861. One of the most influential cookery books ever written.8vo, bound in worn period gilt decorated half calf over green pebble grained cloth covered boards (cloth lacking from the upper), spine with four broad raised bands and black morocco label. Plain endpapers. The binding split away from textblock entirely, the preliminary leaves loose and final two printed leaves detached with the binding.The book measures 12.5cm by 18.5cm.The contents are without the frontispiece (The publisher soon ran out of the frontispiece illustration for the first edition and subsequent issues do not include the frontispiece), lacking pp ix-xxxix, pp1-2 and pp 865-1112, retaining 11 (of 12) colour plates called for. Meeting collation: viii, 3-864pp, with the colour printed additional titlepage, 11 colour printed plates and numerous wood engraved vignette illustrations throughout.
Guaranteed to be a genuine first edition of Mrs Beeton and not a later reprint of any kind.
