This is the smallest pocket barometer I have come across and is in very good original condition. There a a few minor age related knocks/marks to the case commensurate with its age of about 130 years old. Please view the photos
The bezel ring rotates to set the altitude, which is calibrated... up to 3000 feet, and the barometer is calibrated in inches of mercury. This is an extremely rare item, made in such few numbers that I've not been able to find another example by this maker. Barometers of this size by any maker are generally rare !
It comes with its original velvet lined, hinged case also in good condition, measures 4.5cm x 3.5cm x 1.5cm
There are no silver hallmarks on the item.
Thomas Chapman:
Thomas Chapman was registered in the Scottish post office directories in 1870-1873 as a cutler, silversmith, and surgical instrument maker at 56 Buchanan street. There are references online to Hillard & Chapman in 1842, and T.Chapman in 1863 both at the same address.
To construct, by hand, a complete and accurate and working aneroid barometer in a 26mm case is a masterpiece of instrument making, and it was achieved over 130 years ago.
