ANTIQUE 19thC CHINESE QING GUAN CRACKLE GLAZE JAR & COVER VASE, 8 HORSES WANG MUDescription:An antique Chinese Guan crackle glaze jar and cover of large proportions, dating to the late 19th Century Qing period.The bulbous jar, with two bands of iron glaze around the body, outline the blue and white decoration depicting the Eight Horses of Wang Mu, over a grey white crackle glaze body. It is complemented with its matching lid which is decorated with butterflies,... prunus blossom, and an iron glaze branch handle within a greek key design border. The rim of the lid, and the raised foot are both slightly thicker glazed with a light green celadon glaze, which also carries the same crackle finish. The foot rim is unglazed, and the base is marked with a four character Chenghua mark. Theeight horses of King Mu of the Zhou Dynasty is a popular theme for porcelaindecorations. The story originates from Mutianzhi zhuan (An Account of Emperor Mu), about King (Wang) Mu, who dreamed of being an ImmortalGod. He was determined to visit the heavenly paradise and taste the peaches ofimmortality. A brave charioteer named Zaofu used his chariot to carry the King to hisdestination.Duringthese travels the Emperor's chariot was pulled by eight horses, and The EightHorses of Wang Mu became a symbol for the vehicle or journeys of any emperor.
