Henry Jones (c.1605 – 1681) was the Anglican Bishop of Clogher and Bishop of Meath.
"In March 1642, Henry Jones presented his Remonstrance to the English House of Commons. The bulk of this document was made up of materials abstracted from seventy-eight depositions given by individual Irish Protestants over the preceding months. This was the first introduction of the depositions into the public sphere. The testimonies selected were designed in part to highlight the words allegedly spoken by the rebels relating to treasonable aims. According to this account, the Irish rebels intended a general massacre of the Protestant population. For Example, the deposition of John Biggar reported that 'they will not leave an English-man alive'.....Jones's Remonstrance was published around the end of March 1642 and has been classed along with Temple's History as one of the two most widely read accounts of the alleged Irish massacre." The 1641 Depositions and the Irish Rebellion.
This is a very rare, first edition printing, of one of the most historically important pamphlets in Anglo-Irish History. Containing contemporary depositions from those partaking in, and caught up in, the Irish Rebellion of 1641. Despite scholars now casting doubts on the accuracy or bias in some of these accounts, it quickly gained the reputation as being the 'official account' of the atrocities of the rebellion, and it was this 'evidence' that shaped and coloured Anglo-Irish policy for decades to come.
