Original Illuminated Manuscript Gradual (Processional) LeafFrance, c. 1550 Text: PSALMS 6, 23 & 26: “…Expect the Lord, do manfully, and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear…” -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
IM-12597: (183 x 128mm 7 ¼ x5 1/8’’) Very scarce original leaf from a Renaissance manuscript Pro...cessional containing Gregorian Chant. The opening leaf of the parent manuscript stated this was a “Gradual for the Carthusian Order.” France, c. 1550 – From theRoyal Workshop of Henri II.  Note the size: Small highly illuminated manuscript music (processional) wasvery uncommon and expensive, usually reserved for royalty, the very wealthy ormembers of religious orders from notable families.  Eight lines in redink with text and musical notation in black ink (on a four-line stave), on animal vellum. Headings, rubrics andruling in red. One large illuminatedinitial in pink with delicate white penwork and  floral decoration on a liquid gold ground; four illuminated initials and threeilluminated paraphs in liquid gold over grounds of blue or red with goldtracery.                                            The illuminated “D” begins Psalm 6:5:“Domine…” (Turn to me, O Lord, and deliver my soul: O save me for thy mercy’ssake). The illuminated “D” begins Psalm23 (King James 24) 10: “Dominus virtutum…” (The Lord of hosts, he is theKing of Glory). The elaborateilluminated “E” begins Psalm 26 (KJ 27) 14, 1: “Expecta…” (Expect the Lord, do manfully, and let thy heart take courage, and wait thou for the Lord. The Lordis my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear).  Graduals contain themusical chants for the proper of the Mass: introits, graduals, tracts, alleluia, offertory and communion verses, and sequences for special feasts.They may also include chants for the ordinary of the Mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and for the introductory ‘asperges’ rite. This Gradual - Processional leaf wasscribed in France, c. 1550. This is an original, over 450 years old, not areproduction. The condition is shown in the photos, with clean white vellum andbright colors and gold.
