Item History & Price
Mexican Tigre mask from Zitala, Guerrero. This helmet style mask is constructed of layers of hardened leather which is painted in bold colors and accented with mirror (one is cracked from ceremony) and wild boar hair “whiskers.” Guaranteed authentic. Actually used during ceremony in the 1960’s. Dirt can easily be wiped off if you prefer ...the colors to be brighter. The stitching appears to be nylon or monofilament fishing line. Mask measures just over 14” high (including ears) and 15” from eartip to eartip. This type of jaguar mask was used on the feast day of the holy cross on May 3, 4, and 5. As a part of the activities, men from different barrios put on jaguar costumes and carry out fierce fighting competitions that involve beating each other over the head with knotted rope.
