HAND
CARVED
AND PAINTED FOLK ART QUAIL
DECOY CIRCA 1880-1920
Great example of a Circa Turn of the 19th Century (1880-1920) hand carved (from a single piece of wood) Quail decoy. This was purchased directly from the estate of a New England Folk Art Dealer going into Retirement who has had it in their personal collection for half a century!
Take a moment to look at each of the images that help to show...case the great original carving and hand painted details.
Note the great detail along the tail feathers. Has two holes on the underside were the hunter would have placed a set of sticks or dowels in the piece and placed in soil or sand to attract Quail.
The piece has some very slight scattered areas of wear to the body paint around the edges of the tail feathers, top of the head, two very small pin hole size areas on the left wing look to be in the wood prior to painting, possibly grain related. Some wear around the leg holes on the bottom.
Overall Very Good/Very Good+ Condition.
Measures 10 1/4" in length from the tip of the beak to the tail area. Approx 3 1/4" in diameter across the mid section.
Lovely Patina over the whole piece with some slight age related crazing over the white details on the wing feathers from age and time. White shades around the face and underside of the beak are a bit whiter than the tail feather tips. Proper amount of age seen to this area of paint though hard to tell if this area was possibly touched up (if so very earlier in its life) or part of the original paint scheme. As this was a working decoy, and is not signed its hard to find a reference point to the nature and patterns of this individual carver/craftsman.
Just a gem of an early folk art piece up for five days with no reserve and a very low starting bid.
Looks great sitting with the underside of the leg area rested on a felt cloth as we have had it. A base could be fitted to the piece by a custom carpenter or gallery to really showcase its beauty, as it is or could be easily mounted for display.
Please take a moment to view the individual images that help to showcase this wonderful example of Early American Turn of the 19th Century Folk Art!
