This medieval leaf was scribed and illuminated in Anjou, France (use of Angers), c. 1450-75. It is an original, about 575 years old, not a reproduction. It is in nice condition as shown in the photos, with stunning bright colors and gold. Theone-line illuminated “S” continues the Litany of the Saints (first prescribedby Pope Gregory in 590 for a public thanksgiving following a plague thatravaged Rome). This leaf begins with the section of “Per” and “Ut” (Through andThat) followed by an abbreviation for “O Lord Deliver us” and “we beseech theehear us”: “Per ieiunium tuum, Per passionem et crucem tuam…” (Through fasting, O Lord deliver us; through thy cross and passion, O Lord deliver us…That thouvouchsafe to give and preserve the fruits of the earth, we beseech thee hearus; That thou vouchsafe to give eternal rest to all faithful departed, webeseech thee hear us…Lamb of God that takest away the sins of the world, spareus O Lord…) Angers was the cradle of thePlantagenet dynasty and one of the intellectual centers of Europe during thereign of Rene of Anjou, (1434-80). When this was scribed the two English branchesof the Plantagenet dynasty, House of Lancaster & House of York, wereengaged in the War of the Roses. This leaf comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
