Antique CasedSterling Silver Sewing Set English* Circa 1830-40 Thisexceptional set was madein the 1830s or 40s by Joseph Taylor ofBirmingham. Theornatetoolsare all sterling silver (tested). There is a stiletto, scissors withsheath, fish shaped bodkin, and athimble. Englishsilversmithsdidn't mark small items (and have to pay duty on them) until requiredto by law in the early 1880s.
The tools have theornate repoussé floral andleaf de...signs that were Taylor's trademark. The scissors (3 3/4" long)have a matching sheath. Thesteelblades are tight with needle sharp points and they cut well. Thethimble has an applied scalloped floral band. The top has had oneneedle hole repaired, but it's well done and there's no other damage. It'sabout an American size 8(15 mm diameter opening). The silver on all of the piecesis in greatcondition with no dents, splits or other damage.
Theburgundy leather case is also in nice condition. It has a pushbuttonclosure (works well) and the top hasa silver cartouche (not personalized). It hastheoriginal silk and velvet linings with fitted compartments for eachtool. Itmeasures 5" by 2 3/4" and allof the tools look to be original to the set.
