These peoples are primarily farmers with a none centralized social structure, which in the past has relied upon male elders to exercise social control. Their religion relies upon magical objects and figures that are kept in village and family shrines. Large stylized masks are often seen on their masquerade where they symbolize power, strength, and endurance. Their frenetic dances confirm these qualities. They perform in various ceremonies: funerals, initiations, harvest festivals and so forth. he Bobo, of Burkina Faso and, to a lesser extent, Mali, are an agrarian people. Masks are of great importance to them, because they believe that ""masks have the essential function of erasing evil and reinstating the God-given balance between sun, earth, and rain". The Bobo believe that the mask is sacred, and that the wearer erases himself and thus can enact the sacred qualities of the mask.
