Fantastic Late 18th Early 19th Century American Wrought Iron Blacksmith Made Betty Lamp Holder with the BEST Folk Art Design! Circa 1790-1840 New England Or Pennsylvanian Known as 'betty lamp spikes' as they would often support grease and fat burning lamps. As you can see the blacksmith who made this piece was a truly talented one, creating a masterpiece of folk art. We've only ever seen two or three of this particular pattern in a Betty Lamp Spike. Most often the decorations are a silohette ...shape of a Bird. This piece has a three dimestional sculptural construciton. A similar example can be seen in the Pennsylvania book Sunbonnets and Shoe-fly Pies. The bird formation is absolutely wonderful, even retains some details on the head with a punched in eye. Please click on the individual images for enlarged details! Again, you'll see the bird (appears to be a dove) in statue like form has a great pattern to the wings and tail feathers. The piece itself measures just about 7 3/4" in length with the bird having a wing span of 2 7/8".There is some slight soot blackening and pitting (associated and expected) from age. There is some remains of some white wash mortar or paint on the insides of curled decorations at areas. The piece is better than the pictures, and truly one that needs to be admired in person for the wonderful quality of it's construction and design. Truly a gem of early blacksmith made folk art, and certain to be a marveled addition to any folk art, lighting collection, or period country home.Seven day auction no reserve!
