ANTIQUE SOUTH PACIFIC TONGAN OR NEW CALEDONIAN CARVED WOOD WAR CLUB
This is an interesting artifact from the South Pacific islands dating to the late 18th to early 19th century, before steel or bronze was available in the Pacific. Because tribal warfare was common, the islanders used hardwood to make war clubs. These became the most highly prized of the warrior's possessions. This is either a Tongan or New Caledonian war club. The intrica...te carving is more like those from Tonga but the club does have a slightly flared end to the handle, as was common in the New Caledonian clubs. It is 24" in length. The diamond shaped head is about 3" by 2" and this club is quite heavy, made of very dense, hard wood. It would definitely be deadly in battle. There are a couple of slivers at the corners of this club, but the wood is the same color as the rest of the club and does not appear to have been re-stained, so I assume it was made this way by the natives.
