Early quilt! c1860. The Mariner's Compass Quilt is an extremely desirable pattern because of the difficulty of execution. This example is incredibly complex. Note the many sharp points which show the skill of the maker. Great colors of solid turkey red and indigo blue on white. Initials/ signature are quilted in the center border. Unable to read, but can see "Md, " so possibly Maryland. Densely quilted in feathers, outline and triple lines 1/4 inch a...part at 9 stitches per inch. Entirely hand pieced. One inch-long bite on the binding, see photo. Several large coffee colored stains on the back that show lightly on the front. Large 84x105. .
