This is an interesting tribal artifact from the South Pacific islands dating to a period from the late 18th to early 19th century, before steel or bronze was available in the Pacific. Because tribal warfare was common, the islanders used hardwood to make war clubs. These became the most highly prized of the warrior's possessions and warfare was considered honorable and was practiced ...by young men to learn the best arm and body moves to use these clubs effectively. This is a New Caledonian bird-head war club with a wrapped handle and beautiful patina. It is 27" in length. The head is about 7-1/2" from front to back. The eyes are well-defined and the club has no damage. Stuff You Should Read About How We Do Business: ~We are always happy to combine orders for shipping if we can.
