Antique Bronze Ship's Cannon, 17th Or Early 18th Century, Found In The Caribbean.Fabulous antique bronze maritime cannon, probably of European origin; it was found in Caribbean on a ship wreak. Known as a swivel or lantaka cannon, it possesses a base that allows it to be positioned and swiveled on the wooden rails of ships. Crew members could carry them from one side of the ship to the other as needed. They were used for firing at close range onto the deck of an enemy prior to boarding...; sometimes carried on smaller oar-powered boats that pulled alongside larger enemy vessels and fired into the hull at the waterline. The cannon is likely of British or Dutch origin from the 17th or 18th Century, perhaps earlier. These cannons were widely employed by pirates. This cannon has the usual twin bands near the muzzle. The cannon is in good condition (given its age) with surface blemishes. The cannon measures 39.5 inches long and is 4 inches in diameter at it's widest near the end handle. The muzzle opening measures 1.2 inches. It weighs approximately 55 to 60 pounds.
