Vintage C1906 " Blickensderfer No. 5 " Portable Typewriter With Case

This "Blickensderfer No.5" portable typewriter dates from around 1906.In 1891, George C. Blickensderfer (1850-1917) invented a small portable writing machine that featured the ability to change type styles at will, with an interchangeable type head. This unique design formed the basis of a typewriter manufacturing business that lasted almost thirty years.The model No.5 was first manufactured in 1895.The typewriter has the usual scuffs and scratches that you would associate with a mach...ine of this age. The black paint work has only minor paint loss. The exposed metalwork has lost its' finish in places and there are also small areas of surface rust.The applied metal plaque on the front of the machine has "Blickensderfer No. 5, Stamford, Conn., U.S.A." impressed in to it. The serial number is 74529The "D" key is missing, however, all of the other keys are present and there are no chips or cracks and the letters, numbers and symbols are clear and legible.The print head does not roate or hit the platen or the ink roller when the keys are depressed. The carriage doesn't move along when typing, but moves when pushed.The serial number is "11297"The machine has its' wooden case and spare print head in its' screw topped wooden holder.The case has lost its' leather handle.This machine would be ideal for repair or spares.
