Vintage photo album includes 40 pages of black and white photos assembled by Valentine, including trapeze performance snapshots, circus grounds, circus performers and t...ravels around the world.Fred Valentine (1910-1969) was a trapeze performer and owner of the Flying Valentines flying trapeze act, popular in shows and circuses of the 1940's.
Fred Valentine learned the fly-traps at age 17 from his older brother, George, when George Valentine was with Paul Sullivan's "Flying Sullivans" during the 1920's. Subseqently, Fred and four other brothers formed their own flying act; then in 1932 he went on his own. He performed the act into his 50's.
A 1941 news clipping describes the act as one of the "leading flying acts of the American amusement world, " and that the troupe consisted of "three people, a girl trapeze artist, a straight man on the horizontal bars, and a clown. The routines offered in this act consist of pirouettes, somersaults, single and double flying catches and leaps, with a unique variation of the traditional bar leap into the net for the finish."The Flying Valentines were stand-ins for Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Gina Lollobrigida, the stars of the 1956 film "Trapeze", and the troupe helped to promote the film when it was released. Vintage green-cover scrapbook album measures approximately 14" x 11" and is packed with 40 double-sided album pages of black and white photographs dating from the 1920's - 1950's.
Most of the photos are small snapshots, and many feature handwritten captions written by Fred Valentine himself describing the people and places pictured.
Images include wonderful shots of the Flying Valentines performing on the trapeze in various show locations around the world such as Japan, Canada, Alabama, Illinois, Ohio, Niagara Falls, Florida, Kansas and more.
Many images show various circus performers of all sorts in candid shots and on circus grounds such as the E.R. Braly Circus, setting up for a show. A ventriloquist dummy riding a live miniature horse. Traditional circus carriage rolling by. Riggs Brothers, a pair of clowns, clowning around. People riding circus elephants. Performers posing with their dressing room trailers on site. Snapshots of pretty girls and bathing beauties. People holding exotic animals including baby lions/tigers.
