Antique FREDERIC AMBRISTER ' The Sponge Fleet ' NASSAU BAHAMAS Sailboat Photograph
Item History & Price
This is a great piece. This is not the first time I have had one of these original Armbrister photographs. Though they are quite rare, they do show up from time to time in estates around here as someone's grandparents or relatives took a trip to the Bahamas in the early 20th Century and sometimes would bring back a souvenir. For those not familiar with the photo...grapher, I have included his biography below. This is really one of the artist's finest photographs. First off, they are very hard to find. A wonderful gelatin silver print printed on onion skin paper. A great view of the sailboats in the harbor at sunset. Image measures 8 x 11 1/4 inches and is in fantastic as printed condition. Signed and titled in pencil below the image. Being on onion skin paper, it shows some rippling as is to be expected. It is taped verso at the top into the original matte. A contemporary frame makes for an excellent display of this fine rare photograph. Do your own research on this photographer and his work. It is very hard to find any others. Frame measures 15 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches.
His biography from a site that highlights important photographers reads: "Frederick S. Armbrister, a resident of Nassau, Bahamas, visited New Rochelle in the summer of 1914, in connection with Carl Louis Gregory's work in undersea photography with the Williamson brothers. While in New Rochelle he prepared still pictures of undersea views, for use in publicity, and also helped with some of Gregory's personal photography business and worked for a short time at the Thanhouser studio. The New Rochelle Pioneer, August 29, 1914, carried this item: "Frederick S. Armbrister, Nassau, New Providence, Bahama Islands, is located at Carl Louis Gregory's, 19 Rhodes Street, in charge of Mr. Gregory's photographic business while Carl is directing dramas with his company in the national playground at Yellowstone Park." A note in the same newspaper, October 24, 1914, stated: "Fred Armbrister leaves next Friday for Nassau, Bahama Islands, for the winter."
