Rare pair of cabinet card photos of Harvard's first instructor in Chinese, Ge Hunhua, and his family by Pach photographic studios. Ge Hunhua was hired in 1879 by Harvard president Charles William Eliot, and he arrived in this country with his family in the fall of that year. He had one student in the first year he was there.. The Chinese books he brought with him became the seeds for the beginning of the Harvard-Yenching Library of East Asia. Unfortunately, he died of pneum...onia a few months before the end of his three-year teaching contract, and Harvard paid for his family to return to China.
