Click images to enlarge Description Ref: HBThis is an AITCHISON patented pair of aluminium collapsible Binoculars, often issued to British Officers during the Boer War (1899-1902) right through to World War I (1914-1918).
This particular example carries the Patent Number 1016 on the objective bridge, which was granted in 1891.
They are ingeniously designed with a toothed gear scissor "X" action, which extends the spirralled aluminium tubes from almost flat to a maximum length of 5" (12.6 cm).
Being made of aluminium they are very light weight and compact when collapsed.
Obviously the "Galilean" designed optics are very basic, but surprisingly effective, giving reasonable magnification. The lenses are dusty, so would benefit from being cleaned, but are complete and otherwise in good condition, with just a few scratches, but no chips or cracks.
Due to the flexible design of the tubes, collimation can be adjusted on the fly by manually flexing the tubes, to give a surprisingly crisp and bright image.
They are in fairly good cosmetic condition with some surface wear to the lens surrounds and tubes. They are in very good mechanical condition, so the tubes extend and collapse perfectly, but please note my comment regarding collimation; by nature of their design, the tubes are flexible. As this is a design feature, it is only mentioned for the sake of absolute accuracy.
They come in their original soft leather pouch, which has obviously seen better days.
