This is for an extremely rare old Victorian glass resevoir dip pen made by the great Scottish inventor Robert William Thompson who had his workshop at Stonehaven in Scotland. Thompson, who is acknowledged as the inventor of the fountain pen also invented the pneumatic tyre, the ribbon saw and many other very useful inventions. The claim to have invented the fountain pen would be debated by Poenaru and Bion amongst others i would think, but google his name and thats the claim. ...; This pen was patented in 1849, the only reference anywhere to it i can find is in 'Resevoir Fountain and Stylographic Pens' an interesting book based on the Cantor Lectures of 1905. There is a description and diagram of it on page 1146 and 1147. This early version and a unique system whereby the bulb was filled by suction of the mouth, Thompson later made a slight alteration and fitted a piston to do the job. The pen is a true survivor, i dont know of any other example of it, its not featured anywhere in any other book on pens i know about, and the only reason i come to have it is that it came directly from the author of the book. Its a true rarity and it comes in its original card box with its original little label as well. It is in excellent condition with no damage to it anywhere and it measures 150mm long.
