I was lucky enough to save TWO of these amazing units from my Father in-law's estate. He had this unit for over 20 years, fresh from the factory line. He obtained it during his tour in Japan while in the Marines. The man had great audio equipment and he had his MX-1's set back indoors in dry, air conditioned, A/V closet waiting to use them. They were only plugged-in and used a handful of... times. He never got to really use it as his Yamaha Component system was much handier to use and took up less space. I have one of these amazing amplifiers as a permanent fixture in my home, driving my Klipsch speakers. But my wife and I have decided to part with the other unit.
I'm an Electronic Engineer (specializing in RF/Audio engineering) and work with communication systems after many years in large Broadcast engineering and design. I opened this unit and verified the circuitry is in pristine shape. I only used it on my audio system a handful of times and can guarantee it works and sounds amazing. I had it set back as a spare and only used it on line conditioned power. The transformers and capacitors have barely flexed over the years, due to having hardly been powered up. To put it simply, this is a good thing! I've individually measured the transformer taps and capacitors (Main and input caps) and they check WELL within original specs. As to all of the other primary components. So obviously there's no Cap bulging or thermal issues etc. I was able to obtain the original service manual for this exact unit, the US model (Model "U" and "R"), and it needed no calibration! I couldn't believe it but both independent channels were sitting right at 14mV DC at idle voltage, as specified by Yamaha in their Factory Service Manual (Man. 100456 April 1993).
There are some minor scratches on the unit just from having moved it throughout the years but has resided indoors in dry, air-conditioned, environment. The few times I did use it, it was on line-conditioned power from a triple-conversion VAC supply. So this amplifier has seen ZERO brown voltage.
After looking at it and measuring it myself I'm very confident in the integrity of this unit, and will guarantee that for at least 14 days. Due to it's amazing electronic condition it's truly a time-capsule of design and audio. Please let me know if you have any question regarding the amplifier.
