"Princess of Wales"
"Newton Wilson & Co."
Sewing Machine. This fabulous "Princess of Wales" sewing machine has the rare additional "wheel within wheel winder mechanism".
The machine was manufactured by "Newton Wilson & Co.".
Founded by William Newton Wilson, one of the pioneers of the sewing machine industry in Great Britain. In 1870 production of the highly ornate "The Princess of Wales" lock-stitch machine commenced, this was to form the mainstay of the firms sewing machine range. The very ornate cast body with its' pineapples and feathers, is intact with no chips or cracks, that I can find, it has retained much of its' original black japanning and some of the fabulous gilt decoration is also still present. However, there are the usual marks, scratches and scuffs that you would expect to an item of this age and use.The cloth plate is stamped "101308".
The cloth plate has lost some of its' finish and has a few surface rust marks. The porcelain handles to the back are free from any chips or crazing, however, the handle to the foot is crazed and discoloured.
The machine turns well with a good smooth action. Unfortunately, the bobbin and shuttle are missing. It measures approx 33 cm (13 inches) long by 18 cm (7 inches) at its widest and 26 cm (10 1/4 inches) high.
The machine has its' original case, unfortunately, the key is missing.
