Original Description:
Vintage Stuart Turner No. 504 Steam Boiler Model, Brand New in original Box. Condition is New. Shipped with USPS First Class Package. THIS BOILER IS IN THE ORIGINAL CONDITION, BUT WE WILL REMOVE THE ASBESTOS IF DESIRED!!PLEASE ADVISE!!This is a brand spanking new,  unused Stuart 504 boiler in original packaging, silver-soldered copper construction with 6 water-tubes and super heater with a working pressure 60 psi.The date on one shred of the shredded newspaper packing was 1970, wh...ich I assume is close to the time of the original packing. This is an assembled boiler, but here is a copy of Stuarts original instructions for building the boilerThis illustration is typical of all three boilers. With Nos. 500and 501, spirit lamps or gas burners are used. With No. 504, gas burner or paraffin blow lamp is used. The only operation on the steam drum is to mount the fittings. The bosses not required for fittings may be left plugged.See that the boiler end slips snugly into the cast iron front and ease the latter with a file if necessary. Do not touch boiler shell with a file. The asbestos must be wetted before bending; it is then easily formed on the side sheets which also hold it in place when the boiler has been assembled. The chimney is steel tube and a push fit in the cast iron end. A boss is provided so that the steam may be exhausted up the chimney if desired. The centre~be under the drum is the super-heater.MOUNTING THE FITTINGSEvery care should be taken in doing this part of the work not to damage the fittings and to get each one square, inline and steam tight. They should be screwed into the boiler by hand, or if a pair of pliers is necessary they should be protected. If too much force is used, the fine threads will be stripped, and the boiler and fittings spoiled. The water gauge requires most care. Every water gauge has to befitted individually. The two parts (without the glass) must first be screwed into the boiler until they rest on their seatings; then if necessary turned back until they are in line with each other. Then try the glass in position. It must slip easily into place, and be true with the ends. A glance at me drawing will show what is meant. The upper end of the glass must be below the hole which leads into the boiler. The fittings are made steam tight by wrapping round the screwed ends a few turns of cotton (flourishing thread)soaked in a mixture of wrote lead and linseed oil. The cotton is drawn through the fingers to remeNe tl~., sw;plus. Using this give sufficient latitude to enable a fitting t9-be screwed in until it is just m the position required. After the ends of the water gauge have been fitted, the glass must be packed. An ! -in. of rubber tubing is excellent for this. Alternatively, cotton may be used. Finger tightness of the nuts only is necessary, otherwise there is danger of breaking the glass. The safety valve, which also serves as a filling plug, has a large surface to seat on, and should be steam tight without packing, if a small spanner is used, but if it leaks, a thin leather washer (from an old glove) is best.FINISHDull black paint on the cast iron(the "S" looks well-polished), boiler barrel and chimney, leaving the front end of drum natural colour, is most effective.USING THE BOILERFill half full through a funnel with water (rain or boiled) and by moving the boiler, note that the water rises and falls in the gauge glass without obstruction. Opening a cock assists infilling without making a mess.Fill the burner container about two-thirds full and lower the end slightly until the spirit overflows through the slots. Then light and place under the boiler. The container should be t -in. outside the boiler. After considerable use the wick will get charred. To replace, pull off the cast iron end, withdraw the wick, and insert a new one with a piece of wire seeing that 3-ins. dip into the container. An atmospheric gas burner is alternatively supplied if specified. When steam pressure is nearly up, open steam cock slightly and turn the engine over slowly to warm cylinder and steam pipe and to get rid of condensed water. Then when full steam pressure is registered, the steam cock may be fully opened without damage to the engine. Watch the water in the gauge glass. When it is right down to the bottom of the glass, withdraw the fire and allow the engine to runoff surplus steam before the filler is unscrewed for replenishing. If a pump is fitted, it should be used little, and often, to keep the boiler one.: third full. The boiler is not dangerous if run till dry, but it is not good for it and every care should be taken to stop before all the water has disappeared STUARTTURNER, Ltd., HENLEY-on-THAMES
