Montblanc 149 Fountain Pen 1959 - 60. 18C F Flex Nib. Serviced. Rare
Item History & Price
Made in Germany between 1959 and 1960 in this exact form. What a handsome chap this is. Timeless elegance personified. Classic design perfection. 1950 to present day with very little if any change in appearance. They simply got the look right from day one and its popularity to this day is testimony enough that when something looks just right then don't mess with it. The very definition of Design perfection. The model 149 replaced the 139 as Montblancs LARGEST standard production pen. The Flagship model. It is Montblancs longest continued production model. (Unless you count the LeGrand as a 146, , Which it isn't). First launched in 1950 the 149 was Montblancs top of the line model. 149 = 1 Meisterstuck, 4 Piston Fill, 9 size 9 huge nib. In 1958-59 Montblanc stopped using Celluloid to make its pens. This model 149 is the first to use the new Plastic that replaced Celluloid. They also increased the size of the 149 in 1959 with this pen. These are a full 1cm longer than 1950s 149. Indeed these 1959 pens set the now standard size for the 149. So 1959 to present day the 149 size NEVER changed again. These pens are as wide as they are long. They have perfect weight, width and length balance in the hand when writing. If you have never used one before your in for a real treat. These are for people who like OVERSIZED large pens. Very few pens ever made are this big.
The rare highly sought after 3 tone 18C Nib and its Lined Fat Ebonite feed are often stolen from these pens for use on the 1950s Celluloid 149 as they have a crossover and were found on both. By 1961 Montblanc removed the lines from the feed. By 1962 they made the nibs 2 tone. These early 1st issue 1959 pens were also the first to use the Plastic non Cork Piston and have Black Plastic Piston threads. Montblanc was so confident with their new piston design they did not add key grooves to remove the piston for service. So these 1st issue examples were factory sealed and not really designed to ever be opened again. They are a unique 1 piece mould from Blind Cap (Tail End) to Nib. Earlier and Later model 149 are 2 piece with removeable front section and by 1970s 3 piece with separate window also.
By 1863-64 they added 2 slots for a key to unscrew the piston out for service. As such many of these 1959-60 issue pens were thrown away if the piston failed. Even Montblanc themselves never serviced these pens. They simply replaced the whole body and piston for the key type. As such these pens are actually much rarer than 1950s pens top find complete and fully working. Montblanc still to this day will not service this or any pre 1992 plastic thread 149. They still just give you a new 149 and put your nib on it. So only a few people know how to service these 149 and its expensive. This pen has just been serviced and it works perfect. Fills to the max every time with not even a small air bubble. Works as when new. Good to last another 20 to 50 years minimum. These early issue 149 also hold far more ink than the present day 149. Indeed few pens ever made hold more ink than these. The equivalent of 6 Montblanc cartridges. So they need filling rarely. The 18C nib writes with a Fine line that has Extra Fine line side stroke. It also has Semi Flexibility that allows for more line width variation on the down stroke from Fine to Bold Broad lines when varying levels of pressure is applied. The rare FEED offers perfect Ink Flow. The pen itself is in fabulous condition. It has no cracks, dents, bite marks or deep scratches etc. The cap Rings are tight and still have perfect Gold plate. The Clip is also superb with only the light patina you would expect of this age on the high points etc. Overall once in the hand to the naked eye looks fantastic still. Superb example of a rare Montblanc.
