Vintage C1910 " Royal Bar - Lock " Typewriter

Item History & Price

Information:
Reference Number: Avaluer:582196
Original Description:
This striking "Royal Bar-Lock" typewriter was invented by Charles Spiro and produced by the "Columbia Typewriter Manufacturing Co." in New York. The "Bar-Lock" name came from a unique line of small vertical pins in front of the printing point which "locked" the type bar as it hit the platen. The "Royal Bar-lock" was the name used to market the "Columbia Bar-lock" in Europe. The machine is identical to the "Columbia Bar-Lock 8" that was sold in the United States. When the keys are depre...ssed firmly, the type bars strike the platen, however, two or three of the arms are a little bent and they don't move as they should, the typewriter may have been dropped at some point. The carriage return cord is broken and consequently, the carriage only moves when it is pushed with the space bar pressed. There are no cracks or chips to the black painted body, however, there are areas of paint loss, mainly to the edges and corners. The black painted copper name shield is embossed with "Royal Bar-Lock", the shield is also a little bent to one side. The lovely gilt lettering to the back is still clear and legible with a fair colour. The plated metal parts do have loss to the nickel finish and there is also surface rust to them, I have tried to show the condition in the photographs. The double row key board has all of its' keys and these are undamaged, however, some of the lettering, numbers, etc have faded. The serial number for this machine is 107862.This is an early machine in need of TLC to bring it back to its'full glory .
