A photo that shows the engineers at work, one at the theodolite, the other studying a plan, with another figure in the background. The first railway in Portugal was opened in 1856. British engineering expertise would most likely have been used in the project.
Charles Richard Cheffins (1833 - 190...2) was the son of Charles Frederick Cheffins. Between them they ran a publishing business which produced maps of the railways in Britain, over the years in which the system was created in this country. Charles Richard was clearly a versatile character, described on the 1851 census as a chemist, on the 1871 census as a civil engineer, and by 1891 as a Portland cement manufacturer! His father died in 1861, and the son continued the map publishing business, an example being "Maps of the Railways in England and Wales 1865."
He is depicted here with W Sherborn, whose name is spelt "Sherbourne" on the label stuck to the back of the frame.
This is a scarce photo of Victorian surveyors at work, one of whom was an important figure in both the development of railways, and in the map publishing business. It is handsomely displayed in an old maple(?) frame.
PLEASE NOTE: all photos were taken through glass - there may be reflections.
Size: the frame measures approx. 37cms x 31cms.Condition: The photograph is in a good condition, as seen in my photos. A very little bit of foxing at the top, and in the surround. In a handsome frame, though the veneer has lifted in places around the edges (see photo).
