RARE PENCIL SIGNED MASSIMO CAMPIGLI 1932 ETCHING L ' Incontro II MUSEUM QUALITY

HERE IS A VERY RARE signed example of L'Incontro II (1932) known in English as "The Encounter, II", a soft-ground etching by the famed German/Italian artist Massimo Campigli (1885-1971). L'Incontro II is one of Campigli's earliest etchings. According to the BRITISH MUSEUM, which owns and displays an example of L'Icontro, this "etching did not have an edition but was distributed by Campigli himself as a gift to friends." The British Museum example is "Signed in pencil: 'MCampigli'... / Traces of inscription in pencil almost legible: 'Natale 1936'." The example I am offering here is superior, I think, because it is dated 1932, the year the etching was produced. (A third example was just auctioned by Forum Auctions in their "Editions and Works on Paper 1500-2018" on January 29, 2019, and is signed by Campigli with the annotation "Noel 1932"-- that example realized about $1400 USD.). In all three examples -- the British Museum example, the Forum Auctions example, and the one I am offering here, the pencilled signature is light but identical in form. This example measures approx. 7.25" x 11" on wove paper with margins. There are two pieces of tape at the top reverse, where the print, which is unframed (mat not included) was once mounted. Other small defects include a light crease or two in the margins and a small patch of roughness, some foxing, and a light spot or two. (I include enlarged images of any areas where these minor defects appear.). This rare print surfaced in the multi-million dollar Martha's Vineyard estate of an artist and art collector. A wonderful opportunity to own a rare Campigli at a bargain price!
