Original Description:
IMPORTANT, ORIGINAL TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY MANUSCRIPT ACCOUNT BOOK FROM KILLINGLY, CONNECTICUT. Historically significant volume dates from 1905-1909 and was kept by the Paine general store in Killingly, Connecticut. Popular store owned by the prominent Paine family was a fixture in the community for several generations. The iconic local establishment originally founded by Almond M. Paine was eventually taken over over by his younger brother James A. Paine. Among names found in the present... volume include James A. Paine's son James M. Paine who took over the business following his father's passing. (Scroll down below description for more pictures).

"Almond Paine's general store...'Allie Paine's Store', as it was known to local residents, was located on the corner of North Road and Route 101 in East Killingly. The store carried everything from shoes to dried fruit, wallpaper, and all kinds of food. It served the surrounding farms, as well as the mill village, for over 100 years." (see Killingly by Natalie L. Coolidge and Robert A. Spencer, 2000, p. 101). (Scroll down for more pictures.)

"Almond M. Paine and James A. Paine, sons of Ransom Paine of Glocester, R. I., who with his ancestors for several generations had been successful farmers in that town, came to Killingly, Conn., in 1850, Almond M. established a general store at East Killingly, his brother, who was younger, acting as his assistant. In 1857, James A. Paine bought out his brother's interest and continued the business successfully until his death, June 17 of the present year [1897]. He married Mariette Matthews in 1861. They have two sons, James M., and Almond M. James M. Paine was born July 21, 1863, and was consequently 33 years of age when elected a member of the present legislature, being the youngest member from Windham county...in the spring of 1886...he returned to East Killingly associating himself with his father in the general store business which he still continues." (see Taylor's Souvenir of the Capitol, 1897-1898 by William Harrison Taylor, p. 233).

Impressive folio contains thousands of handwritten entries comprising numerous customer names, making for a treasure trove of local genealogy. Book is, in effect, a turn-of-the-century manuscript directory of Killingly residents with some 954 pages of entries. Vast number of entries in a relatively brief period of time indicate store was a principal source of goods for many residents in and around East Killingly, with transactions reflecting a wide range of customers including individuals, businesses, and non-profit entities such as the town of Killingly itself and the local school district. Every imaginable commodity sold in a turn-of-the-century century general store, from food products and medicine to hardware and household goods, can be found within the pages of this sizable manuscript volume.

Killingly is located in the northeast corner of Connecticut, in Windham County. According to recent census figures the town's population stands at about 17, 370 residents. The town was settled in 1700 and incorporated in 1708, becoming the forty-second town established in Connecticut. Killingly today consists of the borough of Danielson and the villages of Attawaugan, Ballouville, Dayville, East Killingly, Rogers, and South Killingly; along with the communities of Chestnut Hill, Elmville, and Killingly Center.

In 1653, the second John Winthrop obtained a grant of a large tract of land formerly held by the Quinebaug Indian tribe and known as the Quinebaug (Long Pond) Country. In May 1708 the General Assembly granted the privileges of a town and defined its boundaries. The selection of a name for the town was referred to Governor Saltonstall, whose ancestral manorial possessions lay in Killanslie and Pontefract, Yorkshire, hence “Killingly, ” formerly spelled Kellingly, was taken from this part of England. The early name of Killingly was Aspinock, even after the authorization of the town by the Connecticut General Assembly, and may have been taken from the Indian word “aucks” or “ock” (the place where) and the name of any early English settler, Lieutenant Aspinwall.

Killingly is the home of Mary Kies, who in 1809 became the first woman to receive a patent from the United States Patent Office (for a method of weaving straw with silk or thread), and also the birthplace of William Torrey Harris and Sidney Percy Marland, Jr., the 4th and 19th United States Commissioners of Education. Charles Lewis Tiffany was born and lived here before moving to New York city where, in 1837, in partnership with John B. Young, also of Killingly, he opened a stationer’s store on Broadway. That enterprise later became the noted jewelry firm Tiffany & Company. During the 1830’s, Killingly was the largest producer of cotton goods in Connecticut and a century later was the curtain capital of the world. In addition to Killingly, Windham County today also comprises the communities of Eastford, Woodstock, Hampton, Pomfret, Ashford, Chaplin, Canterbury, Scotland, Putnam, Sterling, Brooklyn, Plainfield, Danielson, Thompson, and Windham.
