Exceptionally rare and stunningly beautiful, ca1880’s Pair of Larger Size, Native American Santee Sioux Indian Quill Decorated Hide Gauntlets. We must say that these Gauntlets are among THE most beautiful that we have encountered over the past 39+ years and of Museum Quality.
This outstanding Pair of Hide Gauntlets each measure approx. 15 1/2" long overall and 7” wide at the top of the quill decorated, extended cuff. The decoration on the cuffs feature a ...stunningly beautiful, floral design using red, pink, light blue, purple and white colored quills. There are small, cross designs on the back of the middle and third fingers of the Gloves as well as a double band of pink quills that completely encircle the wrist between the hand of the extended cuffs of the Gauntlets These wonderful, Santee Sioux Indian Gauntlets are made of a soft, brain tanned hide with rawhide fringed, applied cuffs. There is a band of blue silk that borders the upper edge of the cuffs and extend to form streamers. The Gauntlets are lined with an early, cotton trade cloth fabric.
The Gauntlets offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. They are NOT reproductions or modern recreations but original Sioux Gauntlets crafted in the third quarter of the 19th century. This very rare and stunningly beautiful, Pair of ca1880’s Santee Sioux Indian Quilled Gauntlets are in very good condition. All of the hide elements are very well preserved – intact and sound – soft and supple with some surface soiling and some light surface wear from honest use. The quillwork is strikingly beautiful and generally very well preserved with some loss most notably at the wrist bands on the inner surface above the palms. All elements of the Gauntlets are original and there has been no repairs or restorations - they are 100% original and 100% beautiful.
