ITEM: This is a circa 1905 vintage photograph from the esteemed Culver Pictures collection. A wonderful historic photograph of the then-new Columbus circle, with the entrances to the Pabst Grand Circle Ladies Restaurant and Majestic Theatre prominently featured. The Pabst Grand Circle was one of a number of buildings that featured prominently in old New York and were owned by the same family which brought the world Pabst Blue Ribbon. The Majestic Theater was a theatre located at 5 Columbus Circle, the present site of the Time Warner Center. Designed in 1903 by John H. Duncan, the architect of Grant's Tomb, it was built at a time that Columbus Circle was expected to become a theatre district. Initially, the theatre, which seated about 1355, hosted original musicals and operettas, including The Wizard of Oz and Babes in Toyland, and some plays. It was renamed in 1912, and that fact, along with the early automobile featured in the image, led us to date this to the middle of the first decade of the 20th century.
