The Guardian-23is my all-time CB tube r...adio favorite, because it is literally built like aCollins radio with all-American quality construction, and it is equipped with aNuvistor tube in the receiver front-end for a high sensitivity paired tolow-noise performance. Only professional radios of the time had this. Last butnot least; I also love the Sixties op-art design of the front panel, a greatlook for this radio. The one for sale here is avery late model with all factory improvements implemented. This radio wasmanufactured in 1976, the last production year for the Guardian-23, just beforethe FCC approved the expansion from 23 channels to 40 channels for the CB band.Pearce Simpson produced this radio from 1963 to 1976, so that is 13 years ofproduction run, unthinkable for today’s throw-away CB radios. The radio being sold hereis factory original, with the exception of one crystal change in the 4 x 6crystal matrix. The previous owner changed one crystal such that channels 1, 2, 3 and 4 became channel 26, 27, 28 and 30. It can easily be undone if you wouldwant it 100% original, but I decided to leave it as it is because having fourchannels in the upper part of the CB band is actually very useful.I tested the radio forfrequency accuracy, sensitivity, output power and modulation quality. Itexceeds ALL factory specifications. See the YouTube video for the results: Receiveris very sensitive, output power is 6 watts carrier and modulation sounds excellent, from the included (original) crystal microphone. The original AC power cord isalso included in this sale. As you can see on thephotos, the outside of the radio is in excellent condition with only a fewminor scuffs that can be expected after so many years. The inside looks like new;the chassis shines like it just left the factory. Why do I stress this fact?Because it is VERY difficult to find these Guardian-23 radios in pristinecondition. Most of what you can find today has been sitting in musty basementsfor many years with corroded the chassis, or they are covered in thick nicotinefilm. NOT this one; THIS radio came from a non-smoking environment and theowner has kept it in an air-conditioned environment for all these years. As aresult, this radio is a 9 out of 10 on the outside, and a 10 on the inside. The last production yearof this radio had a couple of advantages over the older models. For one thing, Pearce Simpson finally fixed the issue with the wiggling channel knob. The oldmodels had a rubber bushing as a shaft bearing, which would dry out and crumbleaway with a loose shaft as a result. In the last production year, this wasfixed by introducing a metal bushing instead, which keeps the channel shaftrock stable. Also, Pearce Simpson replaced the difficult to find two-prongmicrophone connector with a standard four-prong CB jack. This makes it mucheasier if you want to connect your own custom microphone, as four-prongmicrophone connectors are still the standard today. Last but not least, this lateversion has modern Motorola power transistors in the DC-DC converter instead ofthe unreliable Delco germanium transistors that the early models were equippedwith. To summarize: TheGuardian-23 quality tube CB radio is VERY difficult to find in excellentcondition, let alone as the last version produced. If you always wanted a nice all-Americantube CB radio but were never able to find one that meets your high standard asa collector, look no further. You found it; it is here.
