Resting raven plaque carved and painted in pine by First Nations artist Gilbert Smith.
Beautifully shaped... many levels to this carving.
It measures 7 1/4" in height , 3/4" thick and 3 1/4" in width . Lovely red, green and black detail.
Artist George Matilpi was born in Alert Bay, B.C., and is a member of the Carrier Nation. At age 45, he has been carving for about twenty years. Taught by Amos Dawson, C...hief of the Carrier Nation, George Matilpi carves exceptional and traditional Kwakiult wood plaques. He employs the traditional black, red, and turquoise color scheme on unstained cedar wood. Within this traditional framework, Matilpi creates innovative and charismatic animal plaques with personality.In addition to practicing his art, Matilpi is helping to insure its continuation by teaching young carvers in Vancouver, B.C. and Seattle.
