ANTIQUE AMERICAN FOLK ART 19th C Primitive Ex - Voto Forged Iron Animal Statue NR
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:51582 |
Purchased from a dealer who had acquired it in Berks County Pennsylvania some time ago this was part of a collection of "St. Leonard's Animals" from an estate. We have sold the majority of the collection over the past ten years or so.
One of the most alluring aspects of this example is that it is almost IDENTICAL to one featured in the Schiffer b...ook "Antique Iron" as well as "Sunbonnets and Shoe Fly Pies". This is almost certainly the same work as the blacksmith who made the example illustrated in the volumes. As such from a point of reference it is one of the most desired examples we have ever offered! (see image for book reference) This piece is original to Pennsylvania as St. Leonards animals were commonly produced there by blacksmiths during the early to mid 19th century. Again, almost identical examples to this one can be seen in both "Sunbonnets and Shoefly Pies" and the Schiffer Iron book.An ex voto, or offering, these type of animals were produced for farmers who would place them in barns with the primitive belief that sickness and 'spirits' would penetrate the iron animal rather than the live one.I think they are just a lovely representation of period blacksmith folk artistry. As you can see this example, being a horse with perked up ears and the great tail. He measures 7 3/4" in length from nose to tail; standing an impressive 4 3/8" tall. Note the detail to the eye and mouth work. There is some pitting and oxidation to this piece. We have not attempted to clean it. It looks just great in its as-found state of oxidated barn found surface. Thanks for visiting Foxrun Farms now in our 20th year on Ebay!
