Nothing could please Dali more, than to pay tribute to his friend Marcel Duchamp by creatingthe ironic opposite to the famous divisionist painting; hence this beautifulrealistic body – which reminds us in the form of Gala, climbing up the spiralsin a marine shell, symbol of universal life and eternity. "This bronze is Dali's ironica answer to the celebrated painting Nude Descending a Staircase, painted in 1911 by the master of the Dada movement and father of surrealism, Marcel Duchamp. In1912, Duchamp exhibited Nude Descending a Staircase, Numero 2 at the Dalmaugallery in Barcelona. Perhaps Dali saw it there, or maybe he read what the critics had to say about it in the papers. Dali could not have been more pleased to render homage to his friend - and greatly amused himself by creatingthe realistic body of this woman ascending with large steps the spirals of a shell! "
