Profile
Born in the castle of Château de Thorens to awell-placed Savoyard family, the eldest of twelve children born to François deBoisy and Françoise de Sionnz. His parents intended that Francis become alawyer, enter politics, and carry on the family line and power. He studied atLa Roche and Annecy in France, taught by Jesuits. Attended the Collège deClermont in Paris, France at age 12. In his early teens, Francis began tobelieve in pre-destination, and was so afraid that he was pre-emptorilycondemned to Hell that he became ill and eventually was confined to bed. However, in January 1587 at the Church of Saint Stephen, he overcame thecrisis, decided that whatever God had in store for him was for the best, anddedicated his life to God.
Studied law and theology at the University of Padua, Italy, and earned a doctorate in both fields. He returned home, and found aposition as Senate advocate. It was at this point that he received a messagetelling him to “Leave all and followMe.” He took this as a call to the priesthood, a move his familyfiercely opposed, especially when he refused a marriage that had been arrangedfor him. However, he pursued a devoted prayer life, and his gentle ways wonover the family.
Priest. In 1593 he was appointed provost of thediocese of Geneva, Switzerland, a stronghold of Calvinists. Preacher, writerand spiritual director in the district of Chablais. His simple, clearexplanations of Catholic doctrine, and his gentle way with everyone, broughtmany back to the Roman Church. He even used sign language in order to bring themessage to the deaf, leading to his patronage of deaf people.
Bishop of Geneva in 1602. He travelled and evangelizedthroughout the Duchy of Savoy, working with children whenever he could. Friendof Saint Vincent de Paul. He turned down a wealthy French bishopric to continueworking where God had placed him. With Saint Jeanne de Chantal he helped foundthe Order of the Visitation . Aprolific correspondent, many of his letters have survived.
The value of his writings led to his being declared aDoctor of the Church by Pope Blessed Pius IX in 1877, and a patron of writersand journalists by Pope Pius XI in 1923. The Salesians of Don Bosco, the Oblates of Saint Francis de Sales, and the Missionaries of Saint Francis de Salesare named in his honour as is the Saint François Atoll in the Seychelles Islands.

Profile
Son of Zebedee and Salome, brother of Saint John theApostle, and may have been Jesus’ cousin. He is called “the Greater” simplybecause he became an Apostle before Saint James the Lesser. Apparent discipleof Saint John the Baptist. Fisherman. He left everything when Christ called himto be a fisher of men. Was present during most of the recorded miracles ofChrist. Preached in Samaria, Judea, and Spain. First Apostle to be martyred.
The pilgrimage to his relics in Compostela became sucha popular devotion that the symbols of pilgrims have become his emblems, and hebecame patron of pilgrims. His work in Spain, and the housing of his relicsthere, led to his patronage of the country and all things Spanish; forcenturies, the Spanish army rode to battle with the cry “Santiago!” (“SaintJames!”)
Like all men of renown, many stories grew up aroundJames. In one, he brought back to life a boy who had been unjustly hanged, andhad been dead for five weeks. The boy‘s father was notified of the miraclewhile he sat at supper. The father pronounced the story nonsense, and said hisson was no more alive than the roasted fowl on the table; the cooked birdpromptly sat up, sprouted feathers, and flew away.
